WHAT IS COMPUTER..?

WHAT IS COMPUTER?

Computer is an advanced electronic device that takes raw data as input from the user and processes these data under the control of set of instructions (called program) and gives the result (output) and saves output for the future use. It can process both numerical and non-numerical (arithmetic and logical) calculations.
Charles Babbage is called the "Grand Father" of the computer. The First mechanical computer designed by Charles Babbage was called Analytical Engine. It uses read-only memory in the form of punch cards.

DIGITAL COMPUTER

The basic components of a modern digital computer are: Input Device, Output Devices , Central Processor Unit(CPU), mass storage device and memory. A Typical modern computer uses LSI Chips.
Four Functions about computer are:
accepts data
Input
processes data
Processing
produces output
Output
stores results
Storage

Input (Data):
Input is the raw information entered into a computer from the input devices. It is the collection of letters, numbers, images etc.
Process:
Process is the operation of data as per given instruction. It is totally internal process of the computer system.

Output:

Output is the processed data given by computer after data processing. Output is also called as Result. We can save these results in thetorage devices for the future use.

Computer Classification( By Size and Power)

Computers differ based on their data processing abilities. They are classified according to purpose, data handling and functionality.
According to functionality, Computers are classified as:
• Analog Computer: A computer that represents numbers by some continuously variable physical quantity, whose variations mimic the properties of some system being modeled.
• Personal computer: A personal computer is a computer small and low costThe term"personal computer" is used to describe desktop computers (desktops).
• Workstation: A terminal or desktop computer in a network. In this context, workstation is just a generic term for a user's machine (client machine) in contrast to a "server" or "mainframe."
• Minicomputer: A minicomputer isn't very mini. At least, not in the way most of us think of mini. You know how big your personal computer is and its related family.
• Mainframe: It refers to the kind of large computer that runs an entire corporation.
• Supercomputer: It is the biggest, fastest, and most expensive computers on earth.
• Microcomputer: Your personal computeis a microcomputer.

Hardware components:

  • Mouse:

A computer mouse is a pointing device (hand control) that detects two dimensional motion relative to a surface. This motion is typically translated into the motion of a pointer on a display, which allows a smooth control of the graphical user interface.
Physically, a mouse consists of an object held in one's hand, with one or more buttons. Mice often also feature other elements, such as touch surfaces and "wheels", which enable additional control and dimensional input.
Advantages:
              1.Easy to use
              2.Not very expensive
3.Moves the cursor faster than the arrow keys of keyboard.

  • Keyboard:

A computer keyboard is a typewriter-style device which uses an arrangement of buttons or keys to act as a mechanical level or electronic switch.A keyboard typically has characters engraved or printed on the keys (buttons) and each press of a key typically corresponds to a single written symbol. However, to produce some symbols requires pressing and holding several keys simultaneously or in sequence. While most keyboard keys produce letters, numbers or signs (characters), other keys or simultaneous key presses can produce actions or execute computer commands.
Keyboards are of two sizes 84 keys or 101/102 keys, but now keyboards with 104 keys or 108 keys are also available for Windows and Internet.
The keys on the keyboard are as follows:
Sr.NoKeysDescription
1Typing KeysThese keys include the letter keys (A-Z) and digit keys (0-9) which generally give same layout as that of typewriters.
2Numeric KeypadIt is used to enter numeric data or cursor movement. Generally, it consists of a set of 17 keys that are laid out in the same configuration used by most adding machines and calculators.
3Function KeysThe twelve function keys are present on the keyboard which are arranged in a row at the top of the keyboard. Each function key has unique meaning and is used for some specific purpose.
4Control keysThese keys provide cursor and screen control. It includes four directional arrow keys. Control keys also include Home, End, Insert, Delete, Page Up, Page Down, Control(Ctrl), Alternate(Alt), Escape(Esc).
5Special Purpose KeysKeyboard also contains some special purpose keys such as Enter, Shift, Caps Lock, Num Lock, Space bar, Tab, and Print Screen.

  • Digitizing Tablet:
An input device that enables you to enter drawings and sketches into a computer. A digitizing tablet consists of an electronic tablet and a cursor or pen. A cursor (also called apuck) is similar to a mouse, except that it has a window with cross hairs for pinpoint placement, and it can have as many as 16 buttons. A pen (also called a stylus) looks like a simple ballpoint pen but uses an electronic head instead of ink. The tablet contains electronics that enable it to detect movement of the cursor or pen and translate the movements into digital signals that it sends to the computer.
For digitizing tablets, each point on the tablet represents a point on the display screen in a fixed manner. This differs from mice, in which all movement is relative to the current cursor position. The static nature of digitizing tablets makes them particularly effective for tracing drawings. Most modern digitizing tablets also support a mouse emulation mode , in which the pen or cursor acts like a mouse.
Digitizing tablets are also called digitizers, graphics tablets, touch tablets, or simply tablets.

  • Track Ball

Track ball is an input device that is mostly used in notebook or laptop computer, instead of a mouse. This is a ball which is half inserted and by moving fingers on ball, pointer can be moved. Since the whole device is not moved, a track ball requires less space than a mouse. A track ball comes in various shapes like a ball, a button and a square.

  • Joystick

Joystick is also a pointing device which is used to move cursor position on a monitor screen. It is a stick having a spherical ball at its both lower and upper ends. The lower spherical ball moves in a socket. The joystick can be moved in all four directions. The function of joystick is similar to that of a mouse. It is mainly used in Computer Aided Designing(CAD) and playing computer games.

How to Create a Bootable Windows SD Card or Flash Drive

How to Create a Bootable Windows SD Card or Flash Drive

Create a bootable Windows 7 SD Card or USB Flash Drive  If you’re working with a netbook or a tablet computer, you likely won’t have an included DVD-ROM drive.  Normally this is fantastic! It makes your overall device lighter, and less expensive.  But, if you need to install or reformat Windows then you run into some problems rather quickly.  No DVD-drive means you can’t just burn a copy of Windows and throw it in there.  Fortunately, most netbooks have an SD Card slot, and ALL of them support USB Pen Drives.  Let’s use that to our advantage and get Windows running!

What you need to do this:

  • A minimum of an 8GB* removable storage disk.  This can be an SD card or a USB Flash Drive.
  • A computer is already running Windows.
  • A Windows 7, Vista, or XP installation disk or .iso file equivalent.
Although you probably only need 4GB, just grab an 8GB or 16GB from Amazon. They are cheaper every day. Also, remember that in order to use a USB drive for the computer you are installing Windows on you will need a motherboard that supports booting from removable storage.
Got all that? Way to go! Let’s get started.

Step 1

Alright, so you have your SD Card or a USB Pen Drive (some people call either of these flash drives).  Keep in mind that if you go the SD Card route, make sure your computer has an SD Card reader. Good news, they are cheap on Amazon so not a big deal if you need to order one real quick.
Once you have procured yourself one of these, plug it into your computer.  If you have anything valuable saved on your portable storage, backup any data you have saved on your SD / USB before we get started.  In the steps that follow we’ll be formatting and completely cleaning it out in the process of turning it into a windows boot disk.
*Oh, before I forget, a great thing about USB Flash Drives, I suppose a 3GB drive would work, but as far as I know that is a very uncommon size.  And besides, once you are done installing you can use the 4GB drive for ReadyBoost to improve your system performance.
install windows 7 from SD card or usb

Step 2

Go to the Start menu and Type cmd in the search box to open up the command prompt.
start menu launch cmd
In this tutorial we’ll run into a lot of command-line, so to keep it easy I’ll just list the command for each step. You’ll need to Press Enter after each command is typed out.
First, we need to open diskpart, which is a cmd-line program built-in to Windows.
1
Type: Diskpart

launch diskpart

Step 3

A new window should appear with the system32\diskpart.exe in the title bar.
1
Type: list disk
Some disks should appear in a small matrix(chart).  Look for the one that matches the size of your SD Card/USB drive.  It might not be an exact match since actual usable disk space is about 5% less than what is advertised.  For the next command, you need to enter the number that corresponds to that drive.
1
Type: select disk 2
find your sd flash drive

Step 4

Now that the disk is selected, we can start cleaning it up and getting it ready.   These commands should be the same for everyone, so just enter them one after the other.
1
2
3
4
5
Type: clean
Type: create partition primary
Type: select partition 1
Type: active
Type: format fs=fat32
clean and create partition
format partition
Formatting will take a couple of minutes, so now is a good time to grab a snack. ðŸ˜‰
Once it is done, we’ll assign a drive letter to your newly formatted removable storage disk.*
1
2
Type: assign letter=y
Type: exit
*You don’t have to use the letter “y” but since that is likely not taken we’ll use it for this tutorial to keep things simple.
assign new drive letter

Step 6

If you have a Windows 7 installation DVD, insert it into your DVD drive.  If instead you have an installation .ISO, mount it on your computer using a Virtual disk drive.
windows 7 installation disc or iso
Once your disk is inserted, Click the Start Menu and then Click Computer.  A window should pop-up listing all of your hard drives and removable storage.  Look for your DVD drive and take a note of what letter is assigned to it. If you are using a virtual drive, it might be called the BD-ROM drive instead of DVD. In my case, the DVD drive is assigned the letter “e”, so that is what I’ll be using in the next step.
my computerfind dvd drive letter

Step 7

Now all we have to do is copy the files from the installation disk to the sd card.  In the example below, e:\ is my DVD drive and y:\ is my SD card.
1
Type: xcopy e:\* y:\ /s /e /f
This might take a while since you are transferring a little over 2GB worth of files.
xcopy from dvd drive to sd card

Done!

After the files completely transfer, you are done!  You now have yourself a Windows installation portable drive.
Now on for the computer that you want to install Windows on using this, all you need to do is restart the computer and spam-press the F2 key while it is booting up; or whatever the setup key is, but F2 is the standard for many systems.  Pushing the F2 key should load up the system Bios, here you have to go into the Boot Device Priority section and change the USB/SD card to #1 on the priority list.  Once this is set, your computer should treat your SD/USB just like a Windows 7 Installation DVD.
